QuickDial on the iPhone

Yes, it's true. I have become an iPhone fanboy. I love this thing, and feel totally disconnected when I don't have it with me (which isn't very often).

There was originally one single feature that I felt Windows Mobile did better than the iPhone: Dialing contacts based on just typing their names. For some reason, on the iPhone, you need to look up contacts, or have them in your Favorites list, to dial them (other than memorized numbers, of course). Finally, the gap has been closed: QuickDial for the iPhone is out, and it's a gloriously simple (and effective) piece of $0.99 software. You can find information here: http://iphone.pinpointsolutionsinc.com/, but just take your iPhone, head to the App Store, and search for QuickDial.

I've replaced the Phone icon with the QuickDial icon on the bottom of the home screen. That's how much I like it.

# re: QuickDial on the iPhone

Hey Ken, what sort of programming would it require to build one of these iPhone apps?  My wife has one (iPhone) and has already begun to say "I wish it would/could..." which translates to "Can you write some code to ....?"  :-)

Being a Microsoft developer since the great flood it seems, I am lost with this iPhone (and even Blackberry) development stuff.

Any ideas?

Thanks!!

Let's just say that it's not for the faint of heart. There are few similarities between programming using Cocoa Touch and programming using the .NET Framework. The tools are different, the language is REALLY different, and the API (while having some striking similarities to the .NET Framework) is also very different. Unless you're willing to devote serious time to this, you won't be writing any iPhone apps. If you're interested, the best book on this I've found so far is the one from APress by Dave Mark and Jeff LaMarche. In any case, you'll need a Mac, and a copy of XCode (which is free) to do your development work. Good luck!
