Diet Coke with Splenda -- Blech!

Need I say more? Of course, I lived in fear for years that I wouldn't get able to get my Tab fix, back in the early 80s. Got over that, too. And now (I can't believe they still make Tab, but they do), Tab tastes like the waste material from some industrial process. On the other hand, I have lived for several days on Diet Coke, and will miss its Aspartame version, when it goes away. Not terribly technical, I know, but this is important stuff.

Ken - There is no need to apologize. Since Diet Coke is such an integral element of the software development process, this information certainly deserves mention in your technical blog. I was not aware of it - thanks !

Yes, as you say, they still make Tab. And I **love** it. (I grew up in the 70s, and my parents only had diet drinks in the house, so Fresca and Tab were pretty much it for me.) I only drink Diet Coke when I have to.

I know that it is very much an acquired taste, but it does have it's advantages.

1. When I go in public with a can of the stuff, somebody invariably looks upon it as if it were an ancient artifact, and then asks something along the lines of, "They still make Tab?!" He/she may will sometimes follow-up with a "What does it taste like? I heard it was awful..." Something similar can also occur in the checkout line at the store, when the cashier will sometimes ask, "We still sell this stuff??"

2. I share a refrigerator with many different people, and I can be rest assured that there will be no confusion over whose can of Tab it is in there. Try that w/Diet Coke! I save time (tagging the cans/bottles) and stress (I know my caffiene fix will be there when I need it).

3. Tab tastes much better than 70s Fresca ever did!

Exactly how I felt! Then a coworker had me try Coca-Cola Zero. It uses aspartame and tastes better than Diet Coke.

Of course, the blog posting that gets the most comments is the one that has nothing to do with technology. Very funny... I heard that the new Coke Zero is good, although I never liked the way Coke (with sugar) tasted -- too sweet for me. But we'll see. I'll try it.

I am lead to believe that the Aspertame version isn't going away. If you read their press release I think you will come to the same conclusion. And yes the Splenda version is awful!

Press Release:
"Coca-Cola North America today announced that it will introduce Diet Coke Sweetened with Splenda® in the United States in the second quarter of 2005. Diet Coke Sweetened with Splenda will be the seventh addition to the Diet Coke family, which includes the flagship Diet Coke, America's #1 diet soft drink, plus Caffeine Free Diet Coke, Diet Coke with Lime, Diet Coke with Lemon, Diet Cherry Coke, and Diet Vanilla Coke."
