Welcome Robert!

The other big part of SteveB’s annoucment was Windows hypervisor. A feature of “Longhorn” Windows hypervisor will put virtualization into the OS. Very cool!

Steve Ballmer today announced a bunch of stuff today related to Microsoft’s virtualization roadmap including:

  • Virtual Server 2005 SP1 Beta
  • Microsoft will be looking to 3rd parties to provide support for non Microsoft OSes under Virtual Server 2005
  • A new MOM 2005 management pack for Virtual Server 2005
  • Microsoft will license royalty-free the Virtual Hard Disk (VHD) file format

All of this is great news.

Some highlights in what’s new in VS2005 SP1 Beta:

  • Support for Windows 2003 SP1 Guests (right now if you’ve tried I’m sure you’ve found performance suffers)
  • Support for x64 hosts (guests will still be limited to 32-bit OSes)

It's coming to MSDN Subscriber Downloads. I got an e-mail from Europe saying Professional was up and one from Japan saying Team System was available. However, when I log into MSDN Subscriber Downloads, I don't see anything ... yet. :-D

Happy downloading.

One of the problems with working with a laptop with a 15" screen (I was using my ThinkPad T42p) on an airplane is that when the person in front of you decides to lean back, your screen is angled in such a way that you can no longer read it.

Today however I found a nifty trick. On the bottom of my ThinkPad, closest to me, are two rigged rubber feet. I was able to lift the back of my laptop up in such a way that the feet were wedged to the edge of the food tray and the rear of the laptop was lifted up about three inches. I then was able to push the screen back so that it was at about a 90 degree angle. With the person’s seat pushed all the way back and the laptop’s feet hooked to the tray, I was able to type with both hands and get some work done using the leverage of the seat and tray to keep my ThinkPad in place. Naturally when the person got up, the force of their body pushing back was removed but the person on this flight happily slept for most the three hours I was working LAX to ORD.

VSLive! returns to Toronto this year. I'll be flying out on a 6:30am flight out of LAX tomorrow.

Last year was a bunch of fun. I'm doing two talks and an all day post-con on Saturday on Visual Studio 2005 Team System.

And like last year, it looks like I'll get to hang out with an old DM buddy, John Lam.

Things have been super quiet for while on my first blog at [0]. Mostly because I've been super busy. I'll post some of the more interesting things I did and will be doing.

But for now, this is my new blog home on the web. (Old posts for now will stay over here, but I'll move them soon.)
